WHILE JULIA SLEPT, I lay there, cradling her in my arms, not wanting to get up. The entire evening replayed in my mind, over and over, and every time I glanced down at her face, I was reminded of how I failed to protect her. What made it all worse was she didn’t blame me. All she saw was the good in me, and that killed me, because if she even knew half the truth, we wouldn’t be here. She wouldn’t look at me the way she did, and she sure as hell wouldn’t allow me to touch her the way I had.

I glanced over at the clock sitting on her nightstand.

Her father and Theo would be home soon.

Brushing my lips against her shoulder, I placed a kiss against it and then dragged my arm from her waist. A soft sound left her mouth, and I forced myself to stand up.

Walking away from her was becoming harder to do.

How was I ever supposed to let her go?
